The Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association “SEFA” was formed in 1988 to provide leadership in promoting quality and SAFETY in the design, manufacture and utilization of laboratory furniture and equipment. From its humble beginnings with a membership roster of just 15 Executive Members, SEFA has grown, evolved and positioned itself as the industry authority. The most prominent of SEFA’s initiatives is the publication of Recommended Practices for Laboratory Safety.
These Recommended Practices can be found on this site as well as in the SEFA Desk Reference Manual. In 1997 SEFA added an Associate Membership class comprised of Architects, Lab Planners and General Contractors specializing in the laboratory industry. In the spring of 2007, SEFA's membership voted to invite laboratory furniture dealers and installers to add their names to the membership roster as part of the newly created Sustaining Member class. Today, SEFA’s membership has swelled to almost 90 members who are among the world’s largest and most highly respected manufacturers, architects and designers in the laboratory industry.
